As a patch collector who LOVED to visit PDs around the country (I'm not as into it anymore but still love the hobby) and there are more than enough municipal PDs using a ROOM in the town hall, or a trailer, or part of a building.
About 15 years ago I had to do a prisoner pickup at the Whitman PD, and their station was a disgrace....a tiny space in the rear of Town Hall where I literally had to walk sideways to go down some corridors due to the overcrowding. I don't know if they ever got a new station, but I hope they did.

Don't forget Hingham also just in the past 15 or so years moved into a decent station. I've seen Swampscott's station on TV and Hingham's resembled it. Must have been the same architect.

I have a newspaper article from about 20 years ago which is about the Grafton, NH PD's new station, their first. Now I grant you, it's a small, PT department, but it's a very impressive story. The town bought a large house to put some town offices in. The then Chief (who since passed away, GRHS) asked if instead of using his house he could have the woodshed adjacent to the house. For about $7000 he made himself a very nice little station. I took a bunch of pictures. Most of the work was donated by local citizens (Can anyone see that happening HERE?) and the only REAL expense was the cement floor in the basement where he could put evidence and the department's ATV.

It's small, but again, for a PT department, it's absolutely IDEAL! A front desk, a work area with TWO desks (one being the chief's), an evidence closet, a bathroom and in back a training room with a combo sink/stove/fridge in one corner in case guys get stuck working lots of hours.

New Hampshire is a different animal. People tend to respect law enforcement up there, and foster a true community policing philosophy, due to the co-dependence upon one another. The largest departments are either south or near the sea coast. Everything else is Gods country. If your a Deputy/Patrolman/Trooper working up state, its desolate and the need for community involvement is paramount.

That being said, a rural town of 200 has far less resources then a multi-million dollar non-profit company like a college, that chooses to shuffle its campus pd into a closet due to lack of respect/ignorance of what they need/require. My first campus PD department was like that. They couldnt find a closet dark enough to stick us. Then bitch, when we asked to have the heat turned on during the winter!

I had to do a warrant pickup at the Lynn PD many years ago, and their station was atrocious also.....resembled a middle-ages dungeon.

Funny story....that was pre-GPS and pre-cell phones, and we got lost trying to find the station, ending up in a real ghetto area. Finally I told my partner to pull over next to some hoods hanging on a street corner. I rolled down the window and said "My good man, YOU must know where the police station is".

And, he did.

My son just had a baseball game in the field adjacent to their new station. I don't think they're in yet but the building looked pretty impressive from I could see.
Not in yet, but ready too move. Should be within the next several weeks.

I just applied for the job....I am looking to get my foot in the door to gain some experience and hopefully move on...Good Luck
They will ask you in the interview where you see yourself in five years if you get hired there. I doubt they will like your answer.

I fully understand that line of thinking, but you have to keep three things in mind.

1) You may actually grow to like it there and not seek to leave so quickly.
2) You may not be offered a job by anyone else.
3) You may not get THAT job if you use the phrase hopefully move on...

Don't look at it as a 'foot in the door' because all you'll do is become anxious about when/if you're moving on. Look at it as a POTENTIAL CAREER move and take it for what it's worth. There's been many good things said about this department, take it all to heart and take it from there.

In case your wondering why so many campus PD's will only hire those that have already gone through an academy, this is why.
At least he's being honest....when I interviewed with the Boston Housing Police, the chief came right out and said he'd be happy if I stayed 5 years, and ended up doing 6.

thanks for the laugh Delta !

we couldn't find the Holyoke Juvenile Court ( drove right past it because it's a old bus garage and didn't look like a court ) but some Spanish "gentlemen" were nice enough to point the way !

Nothing is worse than being in a state vehicle that says University of Massachusetts, being in full UMass Police uniform and on Rt. 9, having to stop at a gas station to ask directions to UMass. The kid who worked there at first blew us off saying, "Sorry guy, I'm not playing." It took a few minutes to convince him we were from Boston and weren't sure where UM AMHERST was.

We were about 1 mile from campus, but the trees were blocking the highrises. One lousy exit up Rt. 116, but we didn't know it.

I used to date a girl who went there....for such a huge campus, it's actually pretty hard to find the first time.
