Right. My point was simply that whatever group they do belong to still follows the same retirement charts. Where the retirement funds are held is whatever - but I thought they were group2 but maybe not because the firefighters are group 4

The job title doesn’t matter, state college & university PD’s are still Group 2 (absurd) and Boston Housing Police got Group 4 about 10-15 years ago.

Do they have their own retirement system?

Almost everyone has a different “system”, some are independent (big cities), many are in a county system, some places join other systems (the Boston Housing Authority and Boston Water & Sewer belong to the City of Boston Retirement Board). However, all state/county/city/town jobs that have pensions use the PERAC groups and payouts (example Group 4 police & fire).

Massport has their own retirement board, but they have the same retirement groups and payouts as the state and municipalities do. Therefore, state/county/city/town time will transfer to Massport and vice-versa.

The MBTA has a completely different system, any MBTA time won’t transfer to the above, and vice-versa. For that reason, if someone’s ultimate goal is to get onto a state agency like MSP/MEP or a city/town PD, steer clear of the Transit Police, as it will be all “dead time” towards the brass ring (pension).
