UMass/Amherst signed a mutual aid agreement with Hadley in May and just recently on November 28th with Amherst.
:rd:
In addition, UMass/Amherst has put $10,000 into a joint training fund for use with the town of Amherst.

Have a nice day!

That is not correct. UMASS Police get their powers from Chapter 75 Section 32A. A law was passed a year ago that allowed UMASS Amherst PD only, not other UMASS PDs, to establish mutual aid agreements with municipalities, even outside the state agencies.
UMass PD is going to use the mutual aid pacts as a stepping-stone to get into a better retirement group. More power to them...Just wish the legislature would look at the REST of the Commonwealth's State and Community Colleges the same way...

"Special Response Teams" - with similar equipment and arms as municipal SWAT Teams- are not unheard of at campus law enforcement agencies in other states. Not sure about right now, but a few years back, the University of Nevada at Reno had a team, armed with H&K MP5/40 SMG's. And I think that a couple of campus PD's that are part of the University of California system have special response teams also, perhaps with SMG's or patrol rifles in their armories for deployment, if necessary. My guess is that some of the huge mid-western universities may have similar teams. When you are a PD that patrols a campus with a population of 20,000 - 40,000 people, you may have a bigger PD than some of the cities or towns that border the campus. (Of course, most of these Campus PD's are full fledged Police Departments, whose Officers go through the exact same academy as city police officers.)

And no, I am not a campus cop, though I was a Wellesley College campus cop back in 1976-1977. (I am actually a Deputy Sheriff now!)

MSW, I think you're missing the point. Massasoit is a commuter college with maybe 1,000 kids on campus at it's busiest point. I think I'm being very generous with that number also. Bigger colleges like the umass amherst's I think a swat team can be a very resourceful tool. Especially if the local municipality doesn't have one. Some of these bigger schools have more population per square mile that most towns.

I really think a SWAT/SERT/STOP what ever the heck you want to call it is not needed for Massatoilet (just a joke) Anyway the resources and money spent on such a team could be put to much better use at a larger school, Like UMASS or even one of the larger State schools. Though in my opinion I dont think such a team is really needed for any college... maybe a mobile team that covers all schools run by the State but thats about it.

It goes to show you how misinformed you are, especially as an alleged Brockton PD officer. Massasoit has a student population of full-time and part-time of about 12,000. I used to be a police officer there for four years and it is a very busy department with many calls and activity. During the day-time try about 5,000 or more students.

Is that why I had to go up there for a 911 hang up one week day during the school year because there were no massasoit officers on duty?
I got no problem with the massasoit cops up there, they help us out when we're busy by standing by with accidents near the school and the ones I've met are good guys. I just don't think they need a srt team.
No need to get snappy and put your panty's in a bunch..

Things changed after the REAL Chief left three years ago, he was a retired MSP Sergeant and was a real police Chief in a few towns as well as an FBI National Academy Graduate. During vacations there isn't much going on there but hang out but during school it was nutty. Didn't mean to sound snappy, it's just that there is a huge misperception when it comes with what college cops do. I was in the academy when BASHER trained with you guys a few years ago but I heard it was good training. There is no need of a SWAT team, especially with the quick response from Brockton PD or MSP STOP. Plus that way there is no liability to the college. SWAT teams need constant training. This whole message was kind of a joke, because of a certain person at MCCPD that things she can actually run a team. First that person must be able to walk, with 16 million surgeries, can't even shuffle at the range.

I think I remember the old chief, he was a big/tall guy that used to wear a cowboy hat around all the time right? Never really spoke to him but he was friendly with our old chief I believe so I'd see him around once in a while. I did hear good things about him, but I didn't even know he left 3 years ago. I don't know who this woman is you talking about either, I didn't know there was even a female on the department. I've only met and seen guys in the cruisers and on calls.

1.) I agree.
2.) That "mobile team" is called the MSP STOP Team - statewide.

Actually I think I was working that day. I was sleeping behind the St. Joseph's Manor next to 840.:coffee:
Is that a good snoozing spot?
Never thought of using that place.
