(NewsCore) - Two police officers were recovering Saturday after being shot during a struggle with a handcuffed shoplifting suspect at a Kmart store in Burbank, Calif., the Los Angeles Times reported.
The Burbank cops were escorting the suspect out of the store during what was a routine arrest around lunchtime Friday, when he suddenly opened fire with a gun.
One officer was hit three times in the chest, but the shots were deflected by his bulletproof vest. The other officer suffered a gunshot wound to his hand and leg.
It was not immediately clear whether the suspect already had the gun or managed to grab one belonging to the officers.
Witness Joseph Hoage said he saw the handcuffed man being taken out of the store by police when someone shouted: "He's got a gun."
