SOUTH HADLEY - A young boy drowned while swimming in the Connecticut River Saturday afternoon, according to police.

Sgt. Mark Baran said the youth, estimated to be between 10 and 12 years old, had been submerged for about 30 minutes when the town's dive team pulled him from waters just behind the town's so-called beach grounds.

Uncertainty about the boy's identity and his companions still remained last night, Baran said.

"We thought we had a name, but then we were unsure that was the correct name. Our detectives are working with state police, talking to people, trying to find out more," he said.

What pulled the boy under also is uncertain, Baran said.

Police were called by a bystander from an island in the middle of the river, according to police. The witness reported several people "frantically searching," for someone.

Two South Hadley police officers dove into the river to search for the boy and the Fire Department dispatched its search and rescue boat with divers.
Members of the Holyoke and Chicopee police departments responded to clear the nearby Veterans Memorial Bridge of traffic and onlookers and to clear the way for emergency vehicles.

The boy was rushed to Holyoke Medical Center by ambulance. Baran said he expects to release the boy's name once his identity is confirmed and the family is notified.

He said the current is not particularly strong this time of year, but may have become a little more aggressive after recent heavy rainfall.

SOUTH HADLEY - South Hadley police have identified the 12-year-old boy who drowned in the Connecticut River Saturday afternoon as Anthony Day.

Sgt. Robert J. Whelihan said Day, who likely slipped into a deep channel in the river, had been staying with his mother for part of the summer at her home at 66 Bridge St.

Day lived in New Hampshire with his father, Whelihan said.

South Hadley detectives continue to probe the drowning, Whelihan said.

The boy was swimming at the town's beach grounds at the Connecticut River at about 3 p.m. when a man from Holyoke realized he was missing and called police, Sgt. Mark Baran said yesterday.

By the time the town's dive team located the missing boy he had been submerged for about 30 minutes.

He was rushed to Holyoke Medical Center by ambulance, but he died, Baran said.

Police believe the boy was standing on a low island in the river and when he was making it back to shore he slipped and fell into a deep channel, Baran said.
