DOUGLAS-
A wrong-way driver who allegedly caused two crashes in the southbound lanes of Route 146 last night was arrested and charged with drunken driving.

A 13-year-old crash victim was taken from the scene by Life Flight helicopter, and at least two others were taken away in ambulances.

Mariusz Chabros, 38, who police said is from Worcester, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and causing serious injury, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and driving the wrong way. He was being held in lieu of $5,000 bail and was to be arraigned this morning in Uxbridge District Court.

State police said the initial call reporting a dark-colored sport utility vehicle headed north on the wrong side of the highway came in at 5:25 p.m. and was quickly followed by calls reporting accidents between Exits 3 and 4.

State Police Sgt. Timothy Finn said five vehicles including the SUV were involved.

Police from Uxbridge and Douglas, along with firefighters and several ambulances, went to the scene. Officials said three patients suffered multiple trauma and were taken to area hospitals. Police said late last night the 13-year-old had been released from the hospital. Other victims did not appear to have life-threatening injuries.

A sea of blue lights and road flares lit up the area as police closed the road, directing traffic off Route 146 at Exit 4 and onto Lackey Dam Road. Debris littered the roadway as a small fleet of tow trucks began hauling away the wrecked vehicles, some of which had front-end damage and were facing the wrong way as a result of the crashes.

The SUV, a Toyota Sequoia, had front-end damage. It came to rest just north of Exit 4 in the breakdown lane nearest to the high-speed lane and was also towed away.

Trooper Christopher Frazier is investigating and members of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Team were on scene to aid in the investigation.
