Police seize gun, drugs on Mendon Street

WORCESTER- Three people were arrested last night and a fourth will be summoned to court after police found a firearm and drugs during a patrol at a Mendon Street apartment.
James Phelan Jr., 26, of 53 Mendon St., was arrested on an illegal weapon charge shortly after 9:15 p.m. when he tried to evade gang unit officers by running up a flight of stairs to his second-floor apartment. During the pursuit, officers saw him allegedly toss aside a loaded, 9 mm semi-automatic handgun. Jorge Calvo Jr., 20, of 18 Mayside Lane, was arrested when he allegedly tried to interfere with the officers' pursuit and arrest of Mr. Phelan, who was followed inside the apartment. There officers noticed what appeared to be cocaine and measuring scales in the kitchen, according to Sgt. Stephen L. Roche of the gang unit.
Mr. Phelan's brother and roommate, Scott Phelan, 22, was also arrested and charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
Officers sought and received a search warrant for the apartment. In additional to the scales and a small amount of cocaine, they also seized $800 cash and drug packaging materials, the sergeant said.
A pregnant woman in the apartment, Laura Novia, 22, of the same address, was not arrested, but will be summoned to court on a charge of possession of cocaine, Sgt. Roche said.
James Phelan faces charges of carrying a firearm and possession of ammunition without a Firearm Identification card. Mr. Calvo is charged with disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and resisting arrest.
The three men are scheduled to be arraigned today in Central District Court.
Officers James P. Carmody, Christopher A. Panarello and Gary J. Morris of the gang unit made the arrests. They were assisted by Kevin Mailman of the Worcester County Sheriff's Department.
I really didn't pay much attention to this article until I read the last sentence. Is he a screw working in the gang unit? Off-duty just happened to be in the area? Driving a transport van? Intimate knowledge of the suspects?
In the recent climate of everyone trying to take work from police officers I must take issue with ANYONE and EVERY ATTEMPT to cheapen our work or outsource it to other agencies wishing to infiltrate less/unqualified people into our cash-strapped departments. If I'm way off base with this one I apologize in advance.
