WOONSOCKET, R.I. -
A 38-year-old man accused of robbing a Holliston priest last Sunday was arrested early this morning in Rhode Island, police said.
Woonsocket Police said officers recognized Juan C. Cruz from a Holliston wanted alert as Cruz walked along Social Street at about 1 this morning.
"He was just walking and officers noticed him, stopped him, and questioned him as to who he was," Woonsocket Detective Roger Biron said this morning.
Cruz is being held in Rhode Island pending an extradition hearing to Massachusetts, Biron said.
Holliston police say Cruz ripped a donation box out of the hand of the Rev. Gerard Furlan, a priest at Our Lady of Fatima Shrine on Summer Street.
Cruz then ran off with about $500 in cash and jumped into a waiting van, police say.
Woonsocket Police arrested Cruz on a fugitive from justice warrant. Holliston police said they will charge him with unarmed robbery of an elderly person.
