Police say Worcester slaying was a random act

WORCESTER - Worcester police say a city man walked into an apartment building at random, knocked on a random door, then fatally stabbed the woman who opened the door.
Benjamin Makinen was held without bail and ordered to undergo a mental evaluation after pleading not guilty to one count of murder at his arraignment on Monday.
Police say the 22-year-old Makinen stabbed 47-year-old Shelleigh Wilcox on Monday morning. She did not live in the apartment but was staying with a friend who lived there. Police say Makinen called police after the slaying.
Makinen's lawyer says his client has a history of mental illness and takes various medications. He has no prior record.
Police say it was Worcester's fifth homicide of the year.

WORCESTER - A mistrial has been declared for the second time in the case of a Worcester man accused of knocking on an apartment door at random and fatally stabbing the woman who answered.
The Telegram & Gazette reports that a judge declared a mistrial in the prosecution of Benjamin Makinen on Thursday after the Worcester Superior Court jury was unable to reach a decision.
Makinen's first trial in August also ended in a hung jury.
