CONCORD, N.H. (WBZ) ― A former school bookkeeper in Concord plans to plead guilty to skimming more than $400,000 in lunch money from the school district.

Edith Kelley of Loudon is accused of taking between $300 and $400 from the lunch program every day for seven years. According to court records obtained by the Concord Monitor, she has agreed to plead guilty in return for 18 months in jail and repaying the money. She'll be sentenced in November.

Investigators did not say what she did with the money.

The school district says it's installing a new computer system that, among other things, makes it easier to monitor cash flow.

Judge Rejects Deal For Accused Lunch Money Thief

CONCORD, N.H. -- A judge has rejected a plea deal for a former bookkeeper accused of skimming money from the Concord School District's lunch program for seven years.

Edith Kelley, of Loudon, N.H., had agreed to serve an 18-month jail sentence and pay restitution for stealing more than $400,000 from the school lunch program, but before her sentencing hearing on Thursday, Judge Carol Ann Conboy rejected the agreement and told the lawyers to come back in January.

Conboy did not give a reason for turning down the plea, but prosecutors said they hope Kelley will now receive a harsher sentence.
Kelley was responsible for counting the money that students spent in the district's cafeterias. She was accused of stealing $300 to $400 a day after an audit. The theft has been blamed for cutbacks in food services and a reduction in staff hours.

Bookkeeper Gets 3 Years For Lunch Money Theft

Woman Accused Of Stealing More Than $400,000

CONCORD, N.H. -- The former Concord School district bookkeeper accused of stealing more than $400,000 from the school lunch program is going to jail.

Edith Kelley, 47, pleaded guilty on Wednesday and is now serving a three- to 10-year sentence. Kelly is required to pay back the money she stole and may reduce her jail time by completing 150 hours of community service upon release.

Judge Carol Ann Conboy had rejected a similar but less harsh plea deal in November.
Kelly was in charge of counting the school lunch money from 1999 to 2006 and took about $300 a day to pay for family medical bills.
