Teen killed in crash with cruiser

BRANDON, Miss. --

Witnesses said on Thursday that a Brandon police officer had his emergency lights on when he collided with 19-year-old Bradley McElroy on Sunday.
The teenager died in the crash.
Wednesday night, 16 WAPT filed an open records request to get the accident report from Sunday morning. The Rankin County sheriff provided it on Thursday. It outlines how the crash happened and what two eyewitnesses saw.
Broken CDs still lay on Highway 80 in Brandon -- small reminders of a crash that killed McElroy, known as B.J. to his family.
According to the accident report, the officer hit McElroy's car and the force pushed the teenager's car up a median before it came to a stop.
Two witnesses to the crash didn't want to talk on camera about the wreck. But they talked to Rankin County sheriff's investigators at the scene.
According to the accident report, both witnesses saw the officer's emergency lights on before the crash.
That contradicts what Jose Benavides saw.
"I saw him fly by without his lights on," McElroy's friend said. "He did not have his lights on."
Benavides' girlfriend was in the car with McElroy during the crash. Benavides was waiting for them to pick him up less than a mile from where the wreck happened.
"I just thought there was something wrong with that picture, that he should have had his lights on," he said.
The crash investigation continues. Brandon city officials won't comment on the wreck.
McElroy's family members said they vow to keep pressing police for answers.
McElroy's female passenger was scheduled for surgery at University Medical Center Thursday night. She is listed in fair condition.
