Winthrop F.D. Fundraiser May 21st

Posting this for a co-worker who did this last year, and all I can say is this guy is hard core. If anyone can help support him, it would be greatly appreciated.

My Name is Michael Lopez and I am a Firefighter Paramedic for the town
of Winthrop for just under five years now. Before this, I was a member
of the Navy, part of Naval Special Warfare, for six and a half years.
You might say physical fitness has always been a way of life for me,
both at work and at home. Two different careers, both requiring to be
physically fit, as well as handle a great deal of stress. What better
way to relive stress than through fitness.

I feel honored and privileged to be a member of the Winthrop Fire
Department and a Paramedic with Action Ambulance and be able to give
back to the community of Winthrop. When I got out of the military I
moved to Winthrop and the community has opened its arms and has made
this home. I feel honored to give back every chance I can.

Last year I ran for 24 hours, around the Deer Island loop, in an
effort to draw donations and raise awareness about the importance of
physical fitness and the role that after-school or extra-curricular
activities play in helping to shape the lives of young people. I was
able to run just over 92 miles raising more than $10,000 for the
Viking Pride Foundation.

With just this money raised at this event, to this date, we were able
to sponsor 10 families throughout the 2010 school year to help put
there kids in after school activities. This meant we were able to take
these kids off the streets and put them in an organized after school
program. We are also in the process of purchasing a new treadmill to
be placed in the newly renovated high school aerobics room. The
remainder of the funds will be rolled over to the 2011-2012 season
again to help assist families in need.

This year, Beginning at 9 a.m. on May 21 and running until 9 a.m. on
May 22, I will again begin circling Deer Island as many times as I
can, running,
walking, crawling the entire 24 hours, and will be supported by my
friends, family, brothers of the Fire Department, co-workers of Action
Ambulance, and members of the Viking Pride Foundation.

My goal is to run over 100 miles while raising the same, if not more,
than last year. My ultimate goal is to raise enough money to eliminate
school activity fees all together. I will be selling Fire Department
“Get Fit Winthrop” t-shirts and collecting donations during the event.
T- Shirts are $15 dollars a piece donated by Local 1070, as well as
Elite Embroidery, which allows 100% of sales collected to go directly
to Viking Pride Foundation. Also further donations and sponsorships
are greatly appreciated.

More than just the money, I am trying to encourage people to come out
on that weekend and participate a little themselves. Anyone who wants
to come down and walk or run with me, or even if they want to ride
their bike / rollerblade around to show their support would mean a lot
to me. I’d just like to see people be active and help us set a good
example for our young people in town. They are our future.

So on May 21st come on out at anytime between 9am and 9am on May 22nd
purchase a shirt and do a lap, two, or even more. See how far you can
go. Or just stop by and show your support. Should be a great 24
hours!!!

Viking Pride is a great organization that does a lot for the school kids in Winthrop. They just purchased three school buses to transport student atheletes to events in other communities.

Mike did this last year. The mere fact that he ran for 24 hours straight still amazes me.

Hard core is certainly an understatement when it comes to this man. Running for 24 hours borders on superhuman. Wow!
