Jean McMahon was talking to her son, Daniel, in the breezeway of her Elmer Road home Thursday night. He was waiting for his wife to pick him up, and she eventually went to bed while he waited for her.
It would be the last time she spoke to her 49-year-old son. Daniel McMahon's father found him at the bottom of their 10-foot-deep pool the next morning.
"It was awful," McMahon said. "I didn't watch them take him out. Nobody could look out and watch them."
McMahon, a physical therapist and father, appeared to have drowned in his parents' pool. He was discovered around 9:15 a.m., when his father called 911.
The body was removed at about 11:35 a.m.
David Traub, spokesman for Norfolk County District Attorney William Keating, said McMahon's body showed no sign of trauma.
An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday, Traub said.
Members of the Quincy Police Dive Team helped remove McMahon's body, which was found at the pool's deep end.
Jean McMahon said her son lived down the street from her in the house he grew up in on Elmer Road.
