WESTPORT - A homeowner Thursday blocked two suspects' escape as they tried to get away with auto parts from an old school bus he used for storage, leading to their arrests.
Police said the homeowner arrived at his Old Bedford Road around midday Thursday when he observed two men walk over to the bus and begin removing car parts from inside.
He also observed one of the men placing parts inside the bed of a pickup truck they were driving, police said.
Mr. Lord then blocked the truck's exit as the men tried to leave.
The men, later identified as Derrick Paine, 26, of 9 Mount Pleasant St., Westport, and Peter Laliberte Sr., 44, of 45 Whipple St., Fall River, were arrested and charged with larceny over $250.
"Due to the increase in the price of steel- and copper-related products, we have seen a rise in the number of property thefts by thieves who are looking to sell the items at local metal recycling businesses," said Detective Jeff Majewski of the Westport police.
