Weekend accidents tie up Rt. 44 traffic

Gazette Staff , Gazette Staff Reports 03/08/2004

RAYNHAM -- A pair of four-car accidents on Route 24, one following the other, caused significant traffic delays Saturday night, state police said.

No one was injured in either of the accidents, which occurred at 6 p.m. and 6:25 p.m. in the southbound lane of the highway, said Trooper Kenneth Wong who responded to the 6:25 p.m. accident.

The first four-car accident occurred at the interchange of Route 44 in the southern part of Raynham.

When the first trooper arrived to the scene at 6:10 p.m., he discovered one of the four cars involved in the accident had its keys locked inside the car.

Wong said that was one of the main reasons why there was a traffic problem. It took a tow truck about 15 minutes to get to the scene to remove the car.

Just as the first car accident was getting cleared out of the way, four more cars crashed just south of the Interstate 495 interchange in the northern part of town, Wong added.

"The first three cars stopped because of the stopped traffic, but the fourth car did not stop in time and crashed into the third car, which hit the second and so on," he said.

But, Wong added, fortunately the tow truck was able to respond sooner because of where the bypass in the highway was located.

Wong said after the accident was cleared, he stayed in the area for 30 more minutes to make sure nothing else would happen. By then, the traffic had resumed to its normal pace.

However, yesterday afternoon, another two car motor vehicle accident occurred on 250 Cape Highway around 3 p.m., Taunton police records state. No more information was provided by police. The accident was reported to have caused another significant traffic back-up.
