I noticed that Wayland PD has posted for a Lieutenant position on the Massachusetts Municipal Association site. I was wondering if anyone had any insight as to why it was posted outside of the department?

According to the state website….Wayland is a Non civil service department. For all the “warts” that civil service comes with, this is what happens when you leave CS. I worked for both a CS and non civil service department. And I prefer the CS. I’m retired now so I have no “skin in the game”. But I will say that you have to be careful what you wish for. Hiring from outside can be devastating to morale. Just my take on it.

Looking at the salary range, it’s possible that the sergeants are making more money and don’t want the LT position. In that case they open it to outside applicants
