Back in 1965 when I took a Summer job at King's Department Store (HQ in Brockton, they have long been defunct), we had Brockton PD officers/detectives working in plainclothes in the store all the time.
They cruised throughout the store watching for shoplifters. They also picked up money at the cash registers and brought it up to the office.
Nothing new here, except there were no signs warning the perps.
