Fall River -
It took four police officers and and four shocks from a Taser to subdue a city man who police say is wanted in Hawaii.
Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Mauretti said Todd M. Sanchez, 37, 230 Lawton St., is facing multiple charges stemming from a traffic stop on Robeson Street Sunday morning.
Mauretti said officers William Lynch and Adam Talbot were responding to a possible break-in at a barber shop on the corner of Robeson and Walnut streets when they observed an SUV driven by Sanchez traveling north on Robeson at a high rate of speed.
The officers stopped the vehicle, Mauretti said, and Sanchez indetified himself as Ray Fonseca and provided them with a birth date.
The two officers were unable to obtain any information on Fonseca, so they approached Sanchez and again asked for his personal information. When Sanchez could not verify his state identity, the officers asked him to exit the vehicle.
When the officers learned who Sanchez was, they attempted to handcuff the suspect, who began fighting the officers. Sanchez began throwing punches and managed to evade police.
The officers pursued Sanchez and another officer arrived to help, Mauretti. Talbot attempted to shock Sanchez with a Taser, with no effect.
Mauretti said another fight ensued and Lynch attempted to shock Sanchez, again without success.
Sanchez tried to run again and was tackled and again hit with a Taser - this time sustaining a direct hit to the body without the spike system that is used when shooting the device.
As a struggle continued, Mauretti said an unknown woman approached the scene and began yelling at the officers to stop fighting and interfered with the efforts to subdue Sanchez. Mauretti said Lynch was found lying on the ground and bleeding by two officers responding to the scene.
Mauretti said Talbot and Officer Charles Freitas continue to fight with Sanchez, with Freitas again striking Sanchez with a Taser and finally taking him under control.
Lynch and Talbot were taken to Charlton Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released, Mauretti said.
Police said Sanchez was wanted in Hawaii for a parole violation on a charge of armed robbery of a dwelling. Mauretti said the vehicle Sanchez was taken without permission from a friend.
Sanchez faces a bevy of charges, including two counts of assault and battery on a police officer, speeding, possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle after after license revoked, possession of a Class B substance, two counts of possession of Class C drugs, larceny of a motor vehicle, giving a false name to a police officer and resisting arrest.
The woman who yelled at officers trying to arrest Sanchez was later identified as Julie Barlow, 34, of 52 Summerfield St. She is charged with interfering with a police officer during duties and resisting arrest.
