Officials say Windham County's ,Vermont's top sheriff's deputy is under suspension while the state police investigate charges she had an improper relationship with a 17-year-old Brattleboro Union High School student.
Sheriff Capt. Heidi Nelson taught law enforcement classes at the high school and served as the school's resource officer. She was suspended on Friday with pay. Windham County Sheriff Keith Clark says he's doing everything he can to protect everyone involved while the case is investigated.
Officials wouldn't describe the nature of the relationship Nelson is alleged to have had.

A former Captain of the Windham County Sheriff's Department was arraigned Thursday in connection with an inappropriate relationship she allegedly had with a high school student.
Heidi Nelson pleaded not guilty to unlawful restraint. Investigators say she took a 17-year-old girl to Florida without the permission of the teen's parents. Nelson met the girl while teaching a law enforcement class at the Windham Regional Career Center in Brattleboro.
Nelson resigned from the department. She had been the highest ranking deputy with the Windham County Sheriff's Department and was second in command at the time of her resignation.
