GREENWICH, Conn. (AP) - State officials say violations among big rigs checked at Greenwich's I-95 weigh station have more than doubled since early 2007.
The boost comes after state troopers increased inspection hours at the station, 1 of 6 in the state where tractor-trailers and other large trucks are checked for safety and equipment violations.
Troopers issued 5,236 violations and imposed $1.2 million in fines in the first six months of 2008 at the Greenwich station.
That compares with 2,359 violations and $642,000 in fines in the same period in 2007.
Transportation officials say it shows that keeping weigh stations open longer helps catch more violators, making the highways safer by sidelining unfit trucks and drivers.
