Updated: 4:00 PM- Salt Lake City police arrested a 50-year-old man Thursday after they say he stole a Ferrari and a diamond ring.
The man allegedly took the maroon Ferrari 550 Maranello from Steve Harris Imports, near 800 South and Main Street, Thursday just after noon. Employees were rearranging the vehicles and had left some cars idling. That's when the man jumped in the Maranello and took off, said Sgt. Robin Snyder with Salt Lake City police.
Snyder said the suspect drove to Paul Thomas Jewelers, near 200 South between Main Street and West Temple, and stole a diamond ring.
The man then drove to Midtown Pawn near 1100 South and State Street and sold the ring.
The driver was on the lam for a little over an hour when an officer, leaving a training class in his patrol vehicle, heard a call come over his radio saying officers were attempting to locate the car. That officer spotted the Maranello and stopped the suspect at 600 East and 400 South - not far from the downtown police station or the car dealership, Snyder said.
The driver did not try to flee from police, and he was taken into custody without incident.
He was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of auto theft, possession of drug paraphernalia, theft and theft by deception. The man could face a second-degree felony charge for the auto theft, third-degree felony for theft of the ring and misdemeanors for selling the stolen ring and possessing drug paraphernalia.
The car is valued at $130,000, and the ring is worth nearly $2,000.
