Does anyone know why the US Border Patrol would have been stopping cars on the NH border this afternoon?

I cannot provide the specific reason because I left the Border Patrol 10 years ago but I have a good idea. The Border Patrol has authority to board and search any conveyance. A traffic stop on a motor vehicle would usually require reasonable suspicious of a federal violation, such as alien or narcotics smuggling. Various factors can build the reasonable suspicious but it is much harder than a civil motor vehicle infraction. If they set of an immigration checkpoint on a road and were stopping everyone, that requires no suspicion for the stop. Checkpoints are authorized within 100 miles of the border.

As for why today? It was probably targeted enforcement and may have been based on specific intelligence (though not likely). There are twice as many agents on the northern border as there used to be so you will be seeing a lot more of it.

I was driving through northern VT this morning and passed through a Border Patrol checkpoint that closed the highway. If they wanted to check you out, they waved you off the road....if you looked ok, they had you keep moving. The large turnout of BP Officers and Cruisers was cool.

Kuwaiti police set up check points all over the place. You can not go a day with out one check point some place in the county.

They profile big time here. If you are western (ie American or Europian) they wave you past.

What are they looking for? Terrorists and illegals. They have from time to time, when the threat level goes up in this country not allowed young men from Saudi Arabia to come in the the country and they have made women coming from Saudi take off their face coverings to confirm they are female. More then a few Saudi's have been peeved but the Kuwaiti Police could care less.

We have had (as I think I posted some place here) some counter terrorist activity. Police will shoot up an entire building and ask question later.

Does it work? Well in 5 years only one incident where any Americans where attacked or killed.

These two brainless wonders drove and walked around with there ID's (US Military) hanging out of their shirts or from the rearview mirror all the. They painted a target on themselves. Unfortunetly they where faitaly shot by a snipper who was captured and publicy hung.

Something to be said for Force Protection messures.

The Intelligence Bill, based on the recommendations of the 9/11 commission, authorized the hiring of an additional 2,000 Border Patrol Agents a year for 5 years. The Presudent's budget request for FY 2006 sought appropriation of 258.
