STORRS, CT - - Police have arrested a University of Connecticut student they say broke into an off-campus apartment and sexually assaulted a sleeping woman Saturday morning, the second serious sexual assault in the last week.
Frank P. Cirillo, 21, of 59 Penny Lane in Woodbridge, was taken into custody around 2:30 a.m. outside another apartment, after he left the apartment when the woman became combative and alerted others nearby, police said.
Police said Cirillo forced his way into the apartment at Celeron Square, a major off-campus housing complex less than a mile from campus.
He is charged with first-degree sexual assault, home invasion, first-degree burglary, attempted first-degree burglary, third-degree criminal mischief, sixth-degree larceny and second-degree breach of peace.
Cirillo is being held with bail set at $500,000 for arraignment Monday in Superior Court in Vernon.
Police said there is no apparent connection between the overnight sexual assault and the one last Saturday, but they are evaluating the possibility.
On Sept. 6, police said a woman was threatened with a weapon and sexually assaulted in a wooded area near the Hilltop Apartments on campus. No arrest has been made.
