TYNGSBOROUGH - Tyngsborough police say a 20-year-old local man has been charged with two counts of rape of a child with force and one count of indecent assault on a child under 14.
Deputy Police Chief Richard Burrows says the alleged incident took place last week and that the victim and her alleged attacker knew each other.
Burrows says Mark Michael Brunet was arrested Monday afternoon following an investigation and was held overnight without bail.
Brunet is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Lowell District Court.

Kin furious as rape suspect freed

By Jessica Van Sack

The family of a 15-year-old alleged rape victim is outraged that the young man accused of attacking the teen got to walk out of Lowell District Court yesterday after prosecutors failed to request bail.
"I can't believe they let this scumbag out," said the alleged victim's father, whose name the Herald is withholding. "He (allegedly) rapes my little girl and is out the door."
Mark M. Brunet, 20, of Tyngsboro, was arrested Monday by Tyngsboro police and released yesterday on personal recognizance by Lowell District Court Judge Michael Brooks. Brunet pleaded not guilty to two counts of rape of a child with force, and indecent assault and battery.
According to the family and a law enforcement official, the teen told authorities she was sleeping at a friend's house Thursday night when Brunet, the friend's brother, held her down and raped her at around 11 p.m.
Laurie Myers, president of victim advocacy organization Community Voices, slammed prosecutors for not requesting bail and failing to provide a victim witness advocate for the family at arraignment.
"They didn't even bat an eye," she said.
The victim told a family memberabout the rape the following morning and they went to Lawrence General Hospital, where a nurse performed a rape exam, authorities said.
"They said it was extremely obvious a struggle occurred," said the victim's stepmother. "This animal stole her innocence and the criminal justice system raped her again."
Brunet also was arrested less than a month ago on charges of assault and battery on a child with a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest for allegedly shooting a 13-year-old boy in the leg with a BB gun, according to the Lowell Sun.
The victim's father criticized Lowell District Court clerks for failing to allow him to view the case file yesterday.
"People need to know about this," he said.
Corey Welford, spokesman for Middlesex District Attorney Gerard Leone, said prosecutors did not request bail because the defendant does not pose a flight risk.
"This was a 20-year-old defendant who lives with his parents and has no record to indicate he had a risk of flight," Welford said.
Welford said a victim witness advocate was assigned following the arraignment yesterday.
