Two women were killed and a third one was seriously injured last night when the car they were in crashed head-on into a tree off Route 1 south in Wrentham, State Police said.
The driver and the passenger in the front seat were pronounced dead at the scene, which police said was near Myrtle Street, about 3 miles from Gillette Stadium.
The third woman in the car sustained serious injuries and was flown to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, police said. Her condition was not revealed.
The identities of the victims were not immediately released.
According to State Police, the driver lost control of her 2007 Pontiac G5. The vehicle left the road to the right, and then crashed at about 6:56 p.m. Trooper Eric Benson said in a phone interview that speed was a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation. It was not clear whether the victims of the crash, which forced the temporary closure of the right travel lane, were wearing seat belts.
