A Middletown, NY city police officer and state police investigator were each stabbed early this morning in Middletown after they approached a suspect, police said.

The officers approached the suspect as part of a surveillance operation, police said. A fight followed and Detective Sgt. Gerald Minsk of the City of Middletown Police Department was stabbed multiple times. State police Senior Investigator Kevin McGrath was also stabbed, police said.

The suspect was shot by another member of the state police. The officers were taken to Horton Hospital along with the suspect, after he was apprehended.

The name of the suspect was not released. The Orange County District Attorney's Office is also investigating.

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. - Authorities say the suspect in the stabbing of two upstate New York police investigators has died of injuries suffered when he was shot by another officer.

State police Capt. Wayne Olson confirmed Monday morning that 37-year-old Tymmogene Alves of Middletown had died. Olson said he didn't know when Alves died.

Alves had been hospitalzied since early Saturday morning, when he allegedly stabbed Middletown Detective Sgt. Gerald Mishk and state police Investigator Kevin McGrath after they saw him urinating in public.

Authorities say Alves was shot in the chest by another member of the state police.

McGrath was treated and released. Mishk under went surgery and remains hospitalized
