NEW BEDFORD - Two community police officers on patrol downtown arrested two men who allegedly attempted to steal electronic equipment from a parked car.
Officers Paul Fonseca and Gary Sarmento were patrolling the area for any signs of the suspects believed to be responsible for a recent wave of business burglaries in the downtown business district.
The officers reportedly saw Attib Almeida, 33, and George M. Boucher, 35, both of the city, showing interest in a Ford Explorer parked in the area of Commercial and South Water streets.
The officers moved in after they saw the defendants smash the vehicle's passenger side window, court records said. The officers confiscated a flashlight from Mr. Almeida and a box cutter from Mr. Boucher.
Court records said inside the vehicle was a GPS unit mount, a radar detector and a set of keys in the vehicle's center console.
Both defendants were charged with malicious destruction of property over $250, nighttime breaking and entering, and possessing burglary tools.
Police Capt. Joseph Cordeiro, commander of the downtown police substation, commended the officers for their "proactive" police work.
