Job Description
Position is full time with a varying schedule. The Public Safety Dispatcher I is responsible for operating the Public Safety Communications Center on the Boston or Medford campus. Responsibilities include:
Receiving emergency and non-emergency telephone calls, as well as after-hours maintenance requests;
Monitoring computerized alarm and access control systems;
Providing police and EMS dispatch and radio communication management;
Providing a communications interface with other agencies;
Recording all incidents and responses;
Providing in-person customer service;
Performing clerical duties as needed.

Some tasks may be life-safety related and it is thus critical that these be executed in a manner so as to ensure success.

Required Skills
This position requires a HS Diploma/GED, the ability to prioritize and complete multiple time-critical tasks, and ability to function calmly and efficiently under stressful conditions. Technical training, prior experience in a public safety field, and/or experience with APCO Basic Telecommunicator is preferred. The successful candidate must possess excellent written and oral English communication skills and the ability to interact effectively, professionally, and calmly with confrontational situations and/or difficult people. Knowledge of computers and radio communications is highly desirable, as is ability to perform light clerical duties. The selected individual must be resourceful and able to apply keen problem solving skills in a variety of unanticipated situations. Flexibility to work rotating shifts on nights, weekends, and holidays essential, as is a willingness to report to duty at any time, including during states of emergency and University closings.
