TRUCK DRIVER NABBED AFTER 3-COUNTY CHASE;
COP CARS SMASHED

(AP) Marshfield, WI

A semitrailer driver who smashed police cars during an hourlong chase over three counties was being held in Marathon County over the weekend.

Rob A. Collins, 33, was being held pending charges expected today, including fleeing an officer.

Collins raced away from an attempted traffic stop near Medford on Saturday morning, apparently because he was wanted on an outstanding felony warrant for attempted sexual assault of a child under 16 in Eau Claire County, according to the Medford Police Department.

The chase ended outside Marshfield after police used spikes to puncture the truck's tires and then shot into the driver's side of the cab and radiator.

Police decided to use deadly force because the driver had proven to be a threat by destroying a Marathon County Sheriff's Department car, among other actions, said Marshfield Police Sgt. Mark Berres.

"We needed to stop the vehicle before he did any other damage," he said. "We felt that was the only way we could have stopped the truck."

New semitrailers are designed to automatically shut down when radiator fluid levels drop, he said.

Collins suffered minor injuries to his hands and face from broken glass. No one else was injured in the incident.

BRADY LANE/ASSOCIATED PRESS A semitruck continues north on Highway 13 into Marshfield after being fired on by police during a chase. The driver, Rob A. Collins, 33, was arrested Saturday after he reportedly destroyed or damaged several law enforcement vehicles in a chase that began near Medford and ended with police shooting at the truck near Marshfield.
