Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis.
He just wanted to get some groceries, but police Commissioner Edward Davis ended up bagging something else - a shoplifter - at a West Roxbury supermarket on Wednesday.
As the Hub's top cop was entering Roche Bros. on Centre Street about 6:15 p.m., he saw store security chasing a suspected thief, who dropped the loot and ran. Davis got a good look at the suspect before he and officer Q. Riley drove after the alleged grocery-grabber.
About 1,000 feet away on Belgrade Avenue, Davis spotted the alleged perp hiding behind a bush, the giant tattoo on his leg showing through, Riley said.
"He still has that natural cop sense," said Riley, Davis' driver and security detail. "He saw that tattoo through the bushes."
Davis and Riley arrested Christopher McSherry, 26, of West Roxbury. "His eyes opened wide and he said, 'Are you the commissioner?' " Riley recalled. Davis responded: "Yes, I am. It's your unlucky day."
