SAN ANTONIO --
In an effort to increase the agency's efficiency, the San Antonio Police Department began a new initiative designed to allow residents to submit certain reports online and free up officers for emergency calls and immediate threats.
The Smart Initiative -- Strategic Management for Accelerated Response Times -- is expected to reduce the number of calls officers respond to and decrease response time by keeping officers available, SAPD Sgt. Gabe Trevino said.
"If there's a disagreement over a contract, if there's not a breach of peace, we won't send an officer to those calls," he said. "Again, we want to keep those officers available for emergency calls."
Some of the types of reports that can be filed online are animal calls without an immediate threat, code compliance calls and calls for misbehaving children. The online report form can be found on the SAPD Web site.
