SAN ANTONIO --
A San Antonio police officer struck by a vehicle Sunday morning has had her condition upgraded after undergoing several surgeries, a police spokesman said.
Officer Julie Johnson was setting flares along a crash site on Interstate 35 near the Laredo Street exit when she was struck by a passing truck, SAPD Sgt. Gabe Trevino said. Johnson underwent several surgeries Sunday and Monday to repair a torn aorta, he said.
"We're very fortunate," he said. "We very easily could have been talking about an officer killed in the line of duty. The fact that she is still with us is something we're very fortunate for."
Johnson has been with the department for two years, Trevino said. Her husband, also a SAPD officer, also had responded to the crash site and was present when his wife was struck, Trevino said.
