NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A six-year veteran trooper with the Tennessee Highway Patrol has been suspended because he's not a U.S. citizen, even though he indicated he was not a citizen on an application for the job.

Department of Safety officials are questioning how Trooper Steve Sakarapanee, who was born in Thailand, passed through an intensive background check and graduated from the trooper academy before being sworn in on Aug. 10, 1998.

The state's job application notes that some jobs - including troopers, correctional officers and other law enforcement jobs - are ''limited to U.S. citizens.''

Sakarapanee's citizenship status came into question previously when he indicated on his first Highway Patrol application in 1995, that he was a U.S. citizen. He was dismissed from the academy when the false statement was discovered.

Sakarapanee, who has lived in Tennessee since the age of 8 months, said on a subsequent job application that he was not a citizen.

Immigration attorney Charla Haas, who has been hired by Sakarapanee and designated to speak on his behalf, said she didn't know why the trooper hasn't applied for citizenship or whether he now plans to. She declined to answer questions about Sakaranpanee's 1995 application.

The state attorney general's office is investigating whether Sakarapanee's lack of U.S. citizenship status will keep him from returning to his job.

Sakarapanee was hired under a different administration, so current Department of Safety officials do not know why he was allowed to earn a badge, said Melissa McDonald, a department spokeswoman.

''We just honestly want to know what is the right thing to do, so we are looking to the AG's office on guidance on the right thing to do,'' McDonald said.

Leigh Ann Jones, chief of staff for the state attorney general's office, said they're making the investigation a priority.

How any police officer or any federal, state or city worker can get a government job without being a citizen first is beyond me

I am sure after this they will check into prospective troopers before they hire. this is not a good thing for the dept to overlook.

So he was kicked out of the academy for lying about his citizenship then he was re-hired when he didn't lie about something that is supposed to be an automatic DQ. How desperate for Troopers is TN that they even let this guy reapply after he had been shitcanned for deception?
