Teen killed in car crash; two injured

By Craig S. Semon TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF

DUDLEY - A teenage driver returning home from a late-night party with two of her female friends suffered fatal injuries early yesterday when her car went off the road and crashed through a fence and into a detached garage.

Dudley Police Chief Steven J. Wojnar said Shawna J. Larassa, 19, of 20 June St., died yesterday afternoon at UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus in Worcester.

Ms. Larassa was driving a 1998 Chrysler Sebring south on Pierpont Road when the car went through the intersection at Dudley Oxford Road and crashed into a fence and a detached two-car garage, according to police.

The crash also injured Lisa M. Mardirosian and Charnel C. Byrnes, both 18 and of Webster. All three women are graduates of Bartlett High School in Webster, Ms. Larassa and Ms. Mardirosian in 2008 and Ms. Brynes in June.

Chief Wojnar said Miss Byrnes was seated in the back seat and remains hospitalized with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. A witness at the scene said Miss Byrnes ended up on top of the driver.

Miss Mardirosian was in the front passenger seat and was treated and released from the hospital. She was able to get out of the car and yell for help.

Chief Wojnar said it was unclear if the three were wearing seat belts.

Tyler Nowosadko, who was watching television in his living room approximately 15 to 20 feet away at the time of the crash, didn't hear the car hit the family's fence or garage but did hear someone outside screaming for help.

Tyler woke up his parents, Mark and Laurie Nowosadko, who found Ms. Mardirosian wandering outside of the vehicle.

"I'll never forget it," Mr. Nowosadko said. " 'Help me. Help me,' cries for help. That was the girl that was out of the car."

Mrs. Nowosadko tried to comfort Ms. Mardirosian, who was noticeably shaken but didn't seem injured.

"She wanted to stay outside," Mrs. Nowosadko said. "I gave her a couple hugs and told her it was going to be OK."

When he first saw the car, Mr. Nowosadko said the damage didn't look like anything much had happened, but then Ms. Mardirosian told him two people were still inside. And he feared for the worst.

"We knew there were two bodies inside. We tried talking to them. They were non-responsive," Mr. Nowosadko said. "There was nothing anybody could do for the people in the car."

The Nowosadkos, who live at 186 Dudley Oxford Road and own the detached garage that was the site of the crash, said there have been three bad accidents in the last few months on their property.

Yesterday afternoon, state police Sgt. Stephen C. Marsh and state Trooper Daniel J. Nicoloro of the state police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section took measurements of skid marks and the curb and guard rail on Pierpont Road, as well as tire marks at the point of impact.

Charlton Police Chief James A. Pervier said the three teenagers had just left a party in Charlton.

"They were at a residence here in Charlton, prior to the accident," Chief Pervier said. "There was a gathering in Charlton, near the Dudley line, and when they left there, they had the accident."

Chief Pervier said police are looking into whether anything that happened at the gathering was a factor in the crash. Police were interviewing people who were at the party.

Dudley police Sgt. Paul Ceppetelli and Officer Anthony Didonato are the investigating officers.

Family members of Ms. Larassa were not available for comment last night.
