A teenage girl sporting a Red Sox [team stats] sweatshirt was struck and killed by an MBTA train in Mansfield on Saturday night. Authorities were able to identify her yesterday, but did not release the name pending family notification.
Officials said the Providence-bound train had just left Mansfield Station and had come from Boston's South Station. Mansfield cops found the teen's body on the tracks about 300 yards south of West Street.
MBTA spokeswoman Lydia Rivera said the young woman was on the right of way and shouldn't have been. "It is under investigation as to why she was trespassing," Rivera said.
Police got a call at 7:34 p.m. from the Boston Railroad control center reporting that a train had struck a person on the tracks, Mansfield police Chief Arthur M. O'Neill said in a statement.
The victim is described as a white female in her mid- to late-teens with brown hair. She was wearing a gray Sox sweatshirt and blue jeans.
Mansfield and MBTA detectives as well as the Bristol County District Attorney's office are investigating the deadly incident. Anyone with information should call Mansfield police at 508-261-7300.
