A Taunton woman was listed in stable condition Sunday evening after suffering from a 4-inch-deep stab wound to her abdomen.
Cary Robinson, 41, of 185 High St., was stabbed in the kidney area with a large hunting knife by Willie McClendon, 35, just after 5 p.m. in the middle of Cohannet Street, police said.
Before officers arrived, Robinson had stumbled down the street, where an employee at a nearby liquor store stood beside her with a baseball bat to protect the woman from further attacks.
Police fired off six rounds from a pepper ball gun at a distraught McClendon, who led police on a foot chase around the block.
According to Taunton Police Sgt. Paul Roderick, McClendon kept repeating that he wanted to die while clutching the knife.
Eight officers responded to the scene, and at least one drew his gun after McClendon refused to put the weapon down.
He was arrested just outside O'Duinnan's Lounge on Winthrop Street and charged with attempted murder, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest and disturbing the peace while armed.
As of Sunday night, officers could not name a motive for the attack, and details on the circumstances remained thin.
