LYNWOOD, Calif.—A sheriff's SWAT team shot and killed a man who had allegedly shot and wounded the mother of his 2-year-old daughter then held the girl hostage for more than two hours inside his home, authorities said Monday. The toddler was not harmed in the standoff that began at about 9 p.m. Sunday when deputies responding to a call found the child's mother with a gunshot wound outside the Lynwood home, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Byron Ward said.
At about 11:30 p.m. the man was shot by the SWAT team and was later pronounced dead at the scene, Ward said.
"The suspect was hit, the little girl was rescued," Ward said.
The man had been talking to the SWAT team and refused to release his daughter, Capt. James Hellmold told KABC-TV. A deputy fired a single shot and killed him when he was not near the child, Hellmold said.
Ward said the SWAT team entered the house to save the girl, but did not know whether the man was shot before or after the team raided the home.
The wounded woman was shot once in the abdomen and was in stable condition at a hospital, authorities said.
Lynwood is a suburb just south of Los Angeles.
