WEST HARTFORD - - For the third time since 2005, the Central Region Emergency Response Team - comprising Bristol, Southington and Plainville police officers - captured the two-day Connecticut SWAT Challenge.

Two Connecticut state police squads - Tactical Units 1 and 2 - secured second and third places in the annual competition, created and hosted by the West Hartford police SWAT Team.

More than 350 police officers on 33 teams participated in the shooting and physical events in Simsbury and West Hartford on Wednesday and Thursday. Another 150 officers watched, and 60 officers helped clean up after the events, West Hartford police Lt. Donald Melanson said.

The event is the third largest of its kind in the country.
