FRAMINGHAM -
An Ashland man and two Framingham cops were injured during a struggle yesterday after police said the man tried to break into an ex-girlfriend's Second Street home.
Edwin A. Pagan, 48, was taken to MetroWest Medical Center to be treated for head and neck injuries after a violent struggle with officers early yesterday, Deputy Police Chief Craig Davis said.
Officer Stephen Buma and Detective Greg Reardon also went to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries, the deputy said.
Police went to 45A Second St. after receiving a 911 call reporting a break-in, Davis said.
When officers arrived, the woman, who used to date Pagan, said he had just run down the street. Officers began searching.
"A neighbor yelled, 'He went that way,' and they (the officers) started running after him," said Davis. "He began to run."
Officers chased him on Beaver Park Road. At one point, Buma cut his hand while scaling a fence.
When they caught up to him, Buma and Reardon fought with Pagan, Davis said.
"They tackled him, and he's kicking and struggling," Davis said.
Pagan, whose last known address was 12 Douglas Road, was charged with breaking and entering, assault and battery on a police officer, assault with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, intimidation of a witness, domestic threats and two counts of disturbing the peace.
At Pagan's Framingham District Court arraignment, prosecutor Dave Clayton asked Judge Sarah Singer to set bail at $5,000, but defense lawyer Christine Breslin argued that a lower bail would be adequate.
"He tells me the police jumped him from behind," said Breslin. "He said if there was any tussle, it was only him trying to get to safety."
Singer set bail at $2,000. Pagan is due back in court next month.
