PROVIDENCE -- A thief did more than just rob a restaurant in Rhode Island, according to police. Investigators said he tried to get away in a police cruiser, but didn't get very far.

I said it before and I'll say it again...I have no idea why administrators think that they don't need any anti-theft devices in their patrol cars. $100 vs. $30,000 and a ton of liability.

It's a no-brainer, and I have always been weary of leaving my patrol car running out of sight. I know Delta has a different take on it that works, unfortunately I was forbidden from having an extra key by department policy.

I always engage the gear-shift lock while on a traffic stop or street encounter, and while on a radio call I engage the gear-shift lock and also lock the cruiser doors.

I never leave the cruiser running or the keys in it on calls.
