Police said a Stoughton man allegedly kidnapped his 2-year-old son from his estranged wife during a visitation and may be in hiding with relatives in Lebanon.
Stoughton Executive Officer Robert Devine said police have issued an arrest warrant for Haidar Houraibi, 27, of 8 Bassick Circle on a charge of kidnapping of a minor by a relative.
Devine said police have notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation in hopes of tracking down Houraibi and his son in Lebanon. Police suspect Houraibi, a Lebanese national, left the country and is in hiding with relatives in that country.
"We are doing everything we can. We are not just going to throw up our hands," Devine said.
Police said a family court granted Houraibi two weeks of visitation with his biological son. He and his wife are divorced, and she has sole legal custody of their son, police said.
Houraibi was supposed to return the boy to his mother on Monday but "he never showed up," Devine said.
Devine said the challenge facing local and federal authorities is working out a legal resolution with Lebanese court officials if Houraibi is in fact in Lebanon.
There is currently no extradition treaty between the U.S. and Lebanon, he said.
"It is tough. You feel for the mother. She was abiding by the court order. He felt he did not have to," Devine said.
"We are hoping (the Lebanese) court system will be sympathetic to the mother," Devine said.
