State Trooper Jon MacKinnon was just an hour and a half into his shift yesterday morning patrolling Route 9 in Newton, when he stopped at CVS to grab a drink. Little did the seven-year veteran of the state police know he was walking into an armed robbery in progress.
Here is MacKinnon's story, as told to the Herald's Renee Nadeau Algarin

Good job trooper. This is the type of story that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The good guys are all safe and the bad guy goes to jail after getting a good face full of pepper spray.

The Globe just called the colonel demanding to know if the trooper would've discharged his weapon had the suspect attempted to stab the clerk or himself. Anything less than "he would've shot the knife out his hand" response would be unacceptable and subject to front page critique.

Celtics to honor hero trooper tonight

A hero state trooper who wandered into a CVS just in time to stop an armed robbery in progress will be honored by the Boston Celtics [team stats] tonight.
Trooper Jon MacKinnon, a seven-year veteran of the state police, will receive a Heroes Among Us Award from the Celtics tonight.
MacKinnon will be honored for his actions on Jan. 6, when he walked into a Newton CVS as a man with a knife held up the store's pharmacy.
