states east of the Mississippi
The Virginia Department of State Police is recruiting for qualified applicants for the position of State Police Trooper. EARN WHILE YOU LEARN. Qualified candidates accepted to the Training Academy will be paid a full salary of $32,500. At the end of a successful 12-month probationary period following graduation from the State Police Academy, the annual salary will increase to $36,775. In addition, they will receive benefits of approximately 40 percent of salary including employer paid retirement, life insurance, health insurance, sick leave, and paid vacation. They may be eligible for VA Educational Benefits while in training. Upon graduation, candidates are supplied all equipment and uniforms, including a take home car. They are also eligible, with tenure, for promotional opportunities. The Department is accepting applications on a continuing basis.
The duties include but are not limited to: enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia; investigating criminal and traffic offenses; effecting an arrest; communicating effectively both orally and in writing; testifying in court; safely operating a law enforcement vehicle; effectively interviewing individuals; performing lifesaving functions; effectively loading, unloading, aiming and firing firearms; performing effective searches of people and property; and reading and comprehending a variety of legal and administrative documents.
The minimum qualifications for State Trooper are:
must be at least 21 years of age on date of hire
must be a high school graduate or have a GED (college and/or related experience PREFERRED)
must be a United States citizen
must be of good character and reputation as established by a background investigation to include but not limited to: a polygraph examination, educational achievements, prior work experience, character and reputation, credit history and police record
must be in possession of a valid driver's license and a good driving record
must be willing to relocate anywhere in the state based on Department needs (no restrictions on assignment to former home county or city)
must be willing to travel to Virginia at own expense to complete testing and screening process
must be able to meet the minimum vision requirement of 20/100 binocular uncorrected vision, correctable to 20/20 and meet minimum requirements for color vision test
must be able to meet hearing standards established for this position
weight must be in proportion to height
must be willing to work rotating shifts and weekends
must successfully pass all pre-employment testing
