THE STATE JOURNAL-REGISTER
Posted Nov 03, 2008 @ 10:22 AM

The Illinois State Police firing ranges in Pawnee and Litchfield will be open Saturday for hunters to sight and test-fire their shotguns prior to the upcoming deer-hunting season.

Hunters of all ages and experience levels can check their firearms in the presence of experts in the interest of their safety and that of other hunters around them.

The program is offered by the state police and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

"This annual program provides ISP and DNR firearm experts the opportunity to promote hunting safety in a controlled environment while ensuring the safe and appropriate use of shotguns," said Larry Trent, director of the Illinois State Police.

The ranges will be open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Anyone interested in participating should call the ranges prior to Saturday to make a reservation. At the Pawnee range, call Trooper Rich Mahan at 786-6278. At the Litchfield range, call Trooper Dave Zappa at 324-4900.

Targets will be provided, and there is no charge to use the range. Participants must have a valid Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card and must transport their firearms legally - unloaded and enclosed in a case.
