STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) - Stamford police say they now believe a baby found dead Thursday morning was stabbed by his mother about two hours after she gave birth in her home.
Investigators say they believe Angelina Sarmiento stabbed the baby with a kitchen utensil in her apartment on Henry Street and then put him in an outside trash container.
The 25-year-old Sarmiento was arraigned on charges of murder and concealment of birth Friday in Stamford Superior Court. She's being held on $1 million bond.
Her public defender says he's considering requesting a competency hearing for his client.
Investigators believe Sarmiento was distraught about the expense of raising a new child, and they say she has three other children living with her family in Honduras.

Woman Charged In Newborn's Death

Judge Orders Psychiatric Exam

STAMFORD, Conn. -- A judge has ordered psychiatric reviews for a 25-year-old Stamford woman charged with suffocating and stabbing her newborn son.

Angelina Sarmiento has been found competent to stand trial in the death of her newborn son on Oct. 29, 2008. Her attorney says the exams may help determine if she was experiencing postpartum psychosis after the boy's birth.

Authorities say Sarmiento wrapped the newborn in a plastic bag, then later stabbed him with a kitchen utensil and left him in a trash bin.
She has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and concealment of birth. She was being held Saturday on $1 million bond.
