ST. CHARLES, Ill. -- A suburban police officer collapsed and died this weekend while trying to chase down a group of teenagers, police officials said.
The officer served in far west suburban St. Charles.

Police said the students were trying to break into St. Charles East High School.

Five teenagers were charged Saturday with attempted burglary and possession of burglary tools. Police said their target was a golf cart at the high school sports center.

Sgt. Dan Figgins, 53, was responding to an early morning report of suspicious activity at the high school.

Figgins told the dispatcher he was pursuing a suspect on foot.

When there was no further word from him, officers arrived and found Figgins collapsed and unresponsive.

He was pronounced dead at Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva.

The 27-year veteran of the St. Charles force was its senior-ranking sergeant.

The St. Charles Police Department was draped in black in remembrance of one of their own Saturday evening

The teenagers, who are being charged as adults, are expected to appear in bond court Sunday morning.

Visitation for Sgt. Daniel Figgins will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday in Christ Community Church, 37W100 Bolcum Rd., St. Charles, Illinois. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in the church.
