Does anybody know where in New England if anywhere the SSPO Academy is accepted in place of a municipal or state academy. I understand that in Mass the Chief of the particular department can accept the SSPO Academy in place of a municipal if they chose to. I remember hearing rumors when I was at the academy that other states will accept the SSPO academy also! Does anyone know if this is true?? If so what departments will accept it??

I don't believe that the SSPO academy is good for anything other than college campuses, I have never heard of anyone getting on a dept. that wasn't required to go a full academy but hey I could be wrong, but I am almost positive SSPO is only for colleges

This has been discussed many times in many threads.
Bottom line for SSPO.........................

NOT any good in Mass for MCJTC MPOC (Past and current)
MANY Western and other states accept the SSPO Academy for full time equivalency. States like Idaho, Colorado and others are at 10-12 weeks for their Full-time academies. You can link to many of these states by going to google and typing in the "state and post" (Peace Officer Statndards & Training) example=Idaho+post

Good luck!

I hate to stir the pot -- I was under the same assumptions as everyone else regarding the SSPO academy -- but I know of at least one example that bucked the system.

A friend of mine who graduated from New Braintree worked for a campus for not even two years, and was recently hired full-time by a non-civil service town in Massachusetts. The chief waived the academy after this individual passed a basic written MGL exam (brown book?).

Apparently, it can be done if the hiring chief is willing to sign off on it. :-k

I know for a fact New Hampshire and Vermont will waive you in.....you just have to take a 2 week law class for whatever state you are applying.

Littleton Chief got a guy in with SSPO and reserve/intermittent academy. The officer had been a reserve in town for two years. This is straight from the Chief, NOT a friend of a friend of my friend's friend.

I love how in Massachusetts a person could possibly have to attend 4 different academies before their law enforcement days are over

Start off with the Reserve/intermittend to work P/T in a town, then off to the SSPO for 16 weeks of fun with the troopers for college departments, when you get lucky with civil service its off to the municipal because SSPO is no good, after that you take a leave of absense from your city/town department to go to the State Police Academy to become a trooper.
I don't even want to mention the Boston Police Academy for their recurits

Just crazy if you ask me

I agree with all of you too. The reason I believe that we have so many different academies is that it all revolves around the politics of job hiring. Imagine if there were ample Police Academies across the Commonwealth and the criteria for becoming a certified police officer was the same statewide to include every academy having the same length and content? Then you would not have people stereotyping your training or department. It should not matter if your a Campus Police Officer, Housing Police Officer, or a Municipal Cop. If this was the case then you would not have people taking cheap shots at others on this message board....what a concept .......having everyone on the same team. :2c:

There is a bit of logic behind the SSPO not transfering to municipal departments though. One of the reasons behind it was, that people were accepting relativley low paying state campus police officer positions, graduating from a regular municipal academy, and then leaving the campus to a non-civil service police department weeks later. For this reason, supposedly, the non-transferable SSPO was created to retain employees at lower paying campus police positions. Other departments have combatted this by forcing employees to sign agreements, stating that they will not leave, after attending the academy for a certain period of time, or pay back the cost of training.

I spoke to a member of the Littleton P.D. about 5 weeks ago and was told that this Officer was now going to have to attend the municipal academy. I don't know if this has changed since then, but that was the word at the time.
