SPRINGFIELD - A 50-year-old man was found stabbed to death at Main and Bliss streets early Sunday, the second slaying within 10 hours in the city.

Within that time three people were shot also. Their injuries are serious, police said.

The most recent slaying, making it the eighth this year, occurred at 3:30 a.m. Sunday at 1140 Main St.

"The victim is believed to be a homeless man who was stabbed multiple times and transferred to Baystate Medical Center," said police Capt. Robert T. McFarlin, commander of the Detective Bureau. "He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 11 a.m. Sunday."

McFarlin said police are searching for a suspect. No other details, including the victim's name, were released.

Just 10 hours earlier at 5:30 p.m. Saturday a double stabbing occurred in a parking lot adjacent to Salsa's Gourmet Mexican Restaurant, 403 Dickinson St., leaving Huber Alvarado, 21, of 33 Woodlawn St., dead and another seriously injured.

Timometo Diaz, 22, of 254 Oakland St., was arrested in connection with seventh homicide of the year and will be charged with one count of murder and other charges related to armed assault, according to McFarlin. He is expected to be arraigned in Springfield District Court today.

In between the two slayings police responded to three shootings in the city.

"The first one happened at 10 p.m. Saturday on the corner of Andrew Street and Dawes Street in the Mason Square section of the city," McFarlin said.

"An 18-year-old city teen was shot once through the arm and into the upper right torso." The teen was transferred to Baystate Medical Center where he is being treated for serious injuries.

The other two shootings occurred at 2:40 a.m. Sunday at Main Street and Dover Street in the North End section of the city.

"A 27-year-old male and a 23-year-old male, both city residents, were confronted in a lot of a mini-mart and shot at close range by one male gunmen," McFarlin said. The two men were admitted to Baystate Medical Center with serious injuries.

McFarlin said police are investigating the shootings and looking for suspects.
