LUDLOW - A police officer was hit on the side of the head with a rock Tuesday night as she attempted to quell a melee involving about 20 teenagers on Highland Street.

Officer Alison Metcalfe, first on the scene at 83 Highland Ave., was not seriously injured, Sgt. Daniel J. Valadas said. She was hit by rocks at least twice and her cruiser was also hit.

Valadas said the fight broke out "over a car and a girl" shortly after 10 p.m.

Police received so many 911 calls about the brawl that their dispatch center was swamped and some of the calls were routed to Wilbraham and state police.

Five Ludlow police officers, four from Wilbraham and a state trooper responded to the scene, Valadas said.

Police arrested a 17-year-old man and a 15-year-old juvenile and more arrests may be pending, Valadas said. The 17-year-old, identified by police as the rock-thrower, is Patrick Taylor, of 174 Sewall St., Apt. 10. He was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officer and malicious damage to a vehicle.

The juvenile possessed a switchblade knife, Valadas said.

Police confiscated six baseball bats and a barbell from the combatants, all age 15 to 19, Valadas said.

Metcalfe, who has been on the force since 1996, said it was the biggest fight she has ever responded to as a police officer, Valadas said.

Innocent charges on Taylor's behalf were entered in Palmer District Court. He was released on his own recognizance, ordered to refrain from drugs or alcohol, live with his father and obey a 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew.

A pretrial hearing was set for Aug. 19.
