SPRINGFIELD - A state trooper escaped injury last night when she was dragged a short distance by a suspect's car after a traffic stop in the East Springfield neighborhood.

Police are seeking the driver, Richard J. Jones Jr., who fled on foot after the incident which occurred on a side street off St. James Avenue, state trooper Mark A. Weiner said.
The trooper pulled Jones over about 11:30 p.m. Thursday for an attached plate, meaning his license plate didn't match the vehicle.

Jones started driving away while the trooper was leaning halfway inside the car. The suspect stopped after dragging the troopera short distance.

"She is all right," Weiner said of the trooper. Weiner declined to release the trooper's name.

Police caught a passenger who had been in Jones' car, Weiner said.

Jones has family in the Carew Street area, Weiner said.

The suspect has a revoked license and an outstanding warrant, he said.
